Alumni Story Life at University of Hong Kong is Fun and Tough

Alumni Story Life at University of Hong Kong is Fun and Tough

by BIS / 2021.10.22 Friday / Published in NEWS, news & event

Dre Zhiliang Chen, a BIS graduate from the class of 2021, has achieved an excellent DP score of 40. He has received offers from King’s College London and the University of Hong Kong and finally found his right fit in HKU.

He is currently working on his undergraduate degree in Finance and Accounting at the University of Hong Kong. The students of this major go to the Hong Kong Ascot building for classes every day. Years later, they might be working at the top firms in financial streets. Well, it does sound like a dreamy and fancy life, doesn’t it?

As a freshman at HKU, Dre Chen is here to tell you all the true background stories.  All real experiences to share with you.

I am more than honored to be part of the BIS alumni and I would like to say thank you to Ms. Nicole and the whole BIS family who gave me this amazing opportunity to share my story. Without the help of them, I could never achieve what I accomplished.

Dre Chen’s thoughts on DP subject options

I did my full IB Diploma at BIS from 2019-2021 and scored 40 in the DP exam. My goal was very clear-being a businessman, or anything related to accounting, finance, or business. So my IB DP subject choices were easy: Chinese A, English B, Math A&I, Business Management, Psychology, and Physics. IB, as a pre-university program, having a good understanding of subjects will be a solid foundation for your university. It is important to have a big picture of what you want to do in the future, try to choose subjects that are relevant to your major. The wide range of knowledge can benefit you from learning all aspects of practical skills.

Dre Chen’s thoughts on study life in HKU

Currently, I am an undergraduate student at the University of Hong Kong studying accounting and finance. The learning experience, over more than the past month, has taught me that self-study and critical thinking are essential skills in university.

Unlike middle school or high school teachers, professors are not going to chase you after class (Cherish those teachers who care about your homework while you can). These skills are all what IB emphasizes. So, in order to be successful in universities, you should consciously train these skills.
