Elementary School

Elementary School Overview

At Boston International School students are encouraged to be good citizens who can make a meaningful impact in their immediate surroundings and the world at large. Learners go through processes where critical thinking and ademonstration of approaches to learning skills are developed and nurtured throughout their learning. The academic environment is rigorous, yet also a space where they can explore aspects of themselves and others through discovery of the world in which they live.

Curriculum Overview

Our English program focuses on the core fundamentals of language skills such as reading, writing, speaking and listening along with viewing and presenting. A range of genres are used to develop their writing skills, from expository, to persuasive and narrative and in their reading comprehension skills, students are exposed to a variety of different types of fiction and non-fiction. Our program is designed to put English first and extend the knowledge base of the students through comprehensive language skills development.

Our Mathematics program is a combination of Singapore math and TEKS standards. The main key areas are numbers and operations, Algebraic reasoning, Geometry and measurement, data analysis and personal financial literacy. At BIS, we believe in taking an inquiry-based approach to all our learning, and this includes math. We cultivate this by creating a culture of curiosity and collaboration within the math classroom, encouraging students to take responsibility and regulate their own inquiry while exploring mathematical proofs; it is process focused learning through investigation, interpretation, communication in group discussions and is centered around real-life application.

Our key areas are scientific investigation and reasoning; Matter and energy; free motion and energy; earth and space and organisms and environments all covered within the units of inquiry.

Our social key areas are; history, geography, economics, government, citizenship, culture, science-technology-and society which are all covered within the units of inquiry.

In art class, students from Kindergarten through 5th grade learn the fundamentals of visual art through a wealth of art experiences and the promotion of the internationally minded learner through the PYP art curriculum. The students will hone the learner profile to a great extent in the PYP art room. Each learner will be a communicator through the arts and open-minded about the cultural arts explored through inquiry based projects. Students will discover their own balanced way to learn about the subjects in history, math and sciences through the lens of the visual arts. Students will become artists who have a caring outlook on the world through the connections from the PYP art class experience.

BIS Elementary Music Program is a creative and active learning experience that centers around an active understanding and use at different levels of Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, Timbre, and Creativity. To meet the Texas Music Standards and also IB learner profile, the elementary music classes apply various teaching techniques and approaches including Orff Approach where improvisation, composition and a child's natural sense of play are encouraged, and Kodaly Method which strongly focuses on ear training and sight singing. By using these approaches, students will learn many skills including how to perform, listen, describe, sing, move, create, read and write music. These methods also encourage critical thinking, self-discipline, problem-solving, decision-making, cooperation, and imagination. In music classes, students will learn about themselves, other people and humanity in general.

At Elementary we believe that Physical Education (P.E.) is essential to the development of the whole child, through the use and knowledge of the body and its movement. It provides the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and promotes character building, co-operation and self-esteem. Consideration will be given to those with special educational needs and those who are high performing. We also encourage children to participate in the extracurricular activities which are offered as part of the Boston Explorers Program.

BIS offers an English Language Learner program for the ELL students (anyone who does not learn English as their first and primary language). The goal of the ELL program is to develop English language proficiency using second language acquisition methodology by providing specialized English language instruction. In addition, the program helps students acquire the skills necessary to achieve their goals in all academic areas, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Student eligibility for the program entry and exit is determined through the administration of an English language proficiency test. All instruction is provided in English by ELL professionals and promotes academic success in all grade-level content areas.
