Pi Day – Another Way to Study Mathematics

On March 14th, Boston International School celebrated the Pi Day, an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). The day was filled with fun learning opportunities, aiming to encourage and inspire students to study math.

Mathlete Competitions

Both elementary students and secondary students competed in Mathlete competitions for their houses. Through an interactive engaging program called Quizizz, students were able to answer questions on their personal device. A leader board was projected for everyone to see who is in the lead. The courage of students willing to participate in the competition in front of their peers aligns with the IB learner profile.

Memorization Competition

Students also took part in a Memorization Competition of the digits of pi as well. This competition was geared towards the inclusion of all the many languages our school embodies. This is an opportunity for students who are not always the top mathematicians in class to find an area of success by memorizing as many digits possible in the language of their chose.

Pi-The-Teacher

The most exciting part of the Pi Day events was no doubt the opportunity to pie a teacher! The Pi-The-Teacher component, made many students excited. They were given an opportunity to pie a teacher, “literally”, which esteems them and speaks to the humbled teachers who participated.

Ms. Tiffany Allen, Math teacher:

My grandmother always says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I am grateful to BIS for choosing every day to be that village to the students we serve with both grace and poise.

I chose to celebrate this day to esteem and acknowledge the diversity of our school. I truly believe this is what makes our school great, diversity. The diversity of culture, language, race and much more, promote a positive learning environment at our school that will get the engagement of students who do not always feel confident in math.
