Online Learning Platform: IXL

Boston International School has several platforms available for student enrichment and remediation. After looking at several different options, BIS decided on IXL as one of the main platforms for students. We asked Mr. David Bremner, Assistant Principal, for information and his thoughts on IXL:

IXL is an online learning site for students to practice skills in Math, English, science, and social studies. What makes IXL powerful is the connection from what the student completes to the data the teacher can see. IXL is aligned to our curriculum and so teachers can select activities relevant to class content. At BIS, teachers use IXL for in class development, for work assigned to home, for extra practice in concepts, and for use in extension activities.

IXL is now available for our students from kindergarten up to Grade 8. As well as being aligned to our curriculum standards, IXL is also aligned with the NWEA MAP assessments and so it can provide multiple opportunities for students to answer questions like the ones that will appear as part of their MAP experience.

As a school, our students have answered over 500,000 questions on IXL this year, with a lot of our practice going into areas of learning in Math and in English Language Arts. Our secondary science team are finding opportunities this year to make links to their units and what content can be used to develop scientific understanding.

Schools across the world are experiencing the IXL Effect, and our students do too. Research shows that answering at least 30 questions per week has a measurable impact on student outcomes. As you can see, our students are consistently achieving that level, and are often reaching beyond to 60 questions per week.

You may be wondering, “How can I use IXL at home?” and that’s a great question to ask. Log in with your child to their IXL account and see what their teacher has recommended to them. Encourage your child to visit their Recommendations wall for helpful review or new challenges—it’s full of skills picked just for them!

You can also sign in to their account and click “Analytics” so see what they’ve been working on and take a look at their progress.

Currently, each student has their email address attached to their account, but if you want to change that to your email address then you can receive certificates whenever your child reaches a milestone. Simply sign in, click on their profile icon, and enter your e-mail address under “Profile & settings”.
