Community Project – Develop Awareness of Service and Action

Community Project – Develop Awareness of Service and Action

Community Project

The IB Community Project focuses on community and service. Students get the opportunity to explore their right and responsibility to implement service as action in the community. By researching the needs of various communities, planning the service, do the action and reflection after the service, the students develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding of their role in their own community, the local and global.

On April 16th, all G8 students presented their Community Projects to teachers, students and parents on an exhibition held on campus.

All G8 students are requested to participate in the Community Project. The Project was introduced to the students at the end of 7th grade. They can choose from four types of action:

Direct Service

Direct service is where students directly interact with people, the environment or animals.

Super Bird Café

The group’s goal is to save endangered birds and help Mangrove species in Shenzhen. Opening café booth for teachers and students, the group raised over 500RMB for MCF Charity.

Art BE

The group’s goal is to let children express their feelings through arts. Therefore, the group chose to lead a Boston Explorers club and teach young students drawing.

Indirect Service

Indirect service is doing a service that will directly benefit the community or environment, but do not see the recipients of the action.

Online Chess

The group’s goal is to teach chess online. To achieve this goal, they designed their own website that includes chess knowledge, tutorials and online game system.

Advocacy

Advocacy is where you raise awareness of a cause or concern of public interest to get other people to take action.

Dog Man

The goal of this community project was to raise awareness of the current situation of the street dogs and donate money for a dog shelter. By selling cookies and promoting to other students, they tried to raise money as well as raise students’ awareness about the miserable situation of the street dogs. They combined advocacy and indirect type of service in their community project.

Research

Research is where you collect information through varied sources, analyze data and report on a topic of importance to influence policy or practice.

Water Purifier

The project of the group is to find out how to produce drinking water with simple materials that are accessible to everyone. Instead of purchasing a water purifier, they decided to make one by themselves.
