Residential Advisor and Assistant: Shaping Future Leadership

As the only international school that offers a boarding facility in Wuxi, Boston International School is proud of its enthusiastic boarding community. Our boarding students are living a happy life here on campus with strong academic and student wellbeing support, while also play critical roles in the whole community.

As leaders in the boarding community, Resident Advisors (RAs) and their Assistants serve an integral role in the success of the Boston International School Boarding and pre-college community and the students they serve.  Through weekly reflections and consultation meetings followed by applied leadership, they serve student wellbeing in developing hall activities, and greater events that will not only affect the current students but develop a culture of shared responsibility, pride in the living and learning community, and create a safe and inclusive environment for students to enjoy.

To further serve student development, the RAs finds ways for students to demonstrate social and life skills and serve as role models for peers to follow. Meanwhile, RAs develop their leadership skills within the boarding houses and work with the House Supervisors and Boarding Management Team to maintain a safe, comfortable, positive, caring, supportive environment.

Ms. Jane Ma, Boarding Director, states that “We are delighted to recognize those students who represent and serve the whole boarding community with passion, reliability, maturity, and self-started motivation to make a difference in the lives of others; to better their community, and to be an active member of Boarding House.”

About RA Program

RAs and Assistants come from Grades 9-12 and are appointed through a formal interview and selection process. To be selected, students must submit a written application, sit for a formal interview, and be evaluated not only by the Boarding Management Team, but by peers. The selection process begins in May in preparation for the subsequent academic year.

Making it through the selection process and being a RA or Assistant is only the beginning as students then start their intensive training in August. Intensive training includes an induction night and weekly RAs and Assistants training sessions/meetings conducted throughout the year. At the induction night, RAs and Assistants are given information on their responsibilities and a chance to develop their understanding about confidentiality, safety, first aid, listening and support skills, and activity planning. RAs and Assistants learn how to manage teams, how to arrange practical activities/events and start to understand their own strengths and weaknesses as leaders while accounting for their own individual styles. The students also meet with RAs from universities to discuss ideas and receive support from peers on the other side of the graduation threshold. Just this year our BIS RAs have met twice with the RA team from New York University Shanghai.
