Chords into Jazz

https://www.bostonis.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Grade-10-_Glen-Miller_In-the-mood.-23.09.19.mp4

Students performed ‘In the Mood’ by Glen Miller all together as an ensemble.

They have learnt the different elements of jazz style and included all of them in the performance:

  • 12-bar blues chord progression
  • walking bass line
  • the swing style melody of ‘In the Mood’
  • jazz improvisations using the notes of the blues scale (included below).

Music functions as a means of personal and communal identity and expression and embodies the social and cultural values of individuals and communities. This scenario invites exciting exploration and sensitive study.

Performing the music develops the creative skills through exploration and control of musical elements.

Performance skills through group music making demonstrate the understanding of team work. In it’s turn, team work helps to make progress faster and support the student’s motivation to explore the music further.
