BIS Advantage (IV) – Comprehensive Academic Support

The course of study at Boston International School is demanding and rigorous. Our requirements meet or surpass those required for admission to most four-year colleges and universities across the world.

Curriculum

BIS is a fully authorized IB Continuum school, while also authorized by Cambridge and College Board to provide IGCSE and AP curriculums.

IB – The IB offers high-quality programs of international education that share a powerful vision. Only schools that are certificated by the IB organization to provide at least three programs can be called as IB Continuum School.

IGCSE - IGCSE is the abbreviation of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a world popular international certification for end of secondary school. IGCSE was developed by Cambridge International Examinations and is widely acceptable in commonwealth countries.

AP – The AP Program offers college-level courses and exams that one can take in high school. For senior students, the most important is that they are able to earn college credits with their AP scores before even set foot on campus.

TEKS – From this academic year, BIS also applies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into its curriculum to help build a more complete academic system for students.

Khan Academy – BIS encourages students to get access to Khan Academy, a non-profit educational organization with the goal of creating a set of online resources and tools that help educate students.

 

Curriculum

 

Early Years & Elementary School

In our EY and PYP period, BIS sticks to the IB philosophy to provide an inquiry-based learning environment.

Students are encouraged to explore in a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subjects areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry, through which students will think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.

Secondary School

·Students from secondary school are allowed to make the choices for themselves. Courses are divided into Math, Science, English, Arts, I&S, Language Acquisition, PE and Design.

·In each discipline, students can choose from different sub-disciplines. Take Math for example, there are Math, IGCSE Math, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Pre-Calculus.  Each course is divided into different phases for students in different levels.

We also encourage students to find out where their passion lies. Take Design for example, students can choose from different Design courses including Stem/ Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Theatre Production, Model United Nations, etc.

·Teachers will assist and provide suggestions when students are choosing their courses, in order to make sure that every student get their best fit.

Examinations

Students in BIS have got the opportunities to take part in world-level standard examinations. This way, teachers and parents can understand the students’ potentials and shortcomings in the perspective of a global average level and adjust the teaching plan accordingly.

IBDP

For IBDP students, DP scores is one of the most important elements when applying for colleges. In the past academic year, our DP graduates got an average of 37 points in DP exams.

IGCSE

G10 students can get to know their academic performances before they going into DP period via IGCSE tests, n addition to IB evaluations.

PSAT

The Preliminary SAT is a standardized test for Grade 8-11 students, which gives an accurate reflection on a student’s academic performance before actually attending SAT.

SAT

SAT is mainly for students from Grade 11-12 and also excellent students from Grade 10. All students registered in BIS are able to attend SAT exams, which is one of the most acknowledged assessment when applying for colleges all around the world.

MAP Testing

MAP, or the Measure of Academic Progress, is a computerized adaptive test which helps teachers and parents improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth.

 

College Counselling

The university application process at BIS is a four-year process. Our College Counsellors will work closely with each student and family progressively as the student moves throughout his or her high school years. Students are expected to attend all college preparatory meetings, attend school sponsored college fairs, meet with college admissions representatives on campus, follow up on applications, and attend to their academics to have the best college choices.
