On the afternoon of Monday 18th April, MYP students from Grades 6-10 hosted the BIS MYP Science Fair. This has become an annual event at BIS and it’s progressing every year.
Students have spent an average of one Science lesson each two weeks since November working on the Science Fair in collaborative groups, supported by their Science teachers with younger MYP students having the opportunity to be mentored by DP students. Students overcame the challenges of communication and self-management within their groups, in addition to presenting their scientific process on a poster board at the Science Fair itself. Some groups even chose to demonstrate parts of their experimental work to visitors on the days, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
All of the Science Fair projects were assessed by Science teachers using the MYP Science Criteria. The most effective Science Fair projects were the ones where groups were able to demonstrate their abilities to design an experiment, collect and process data and make valid conclusions based on their own scientific evidence. The range of projects was diverse, ranging from groups exploring scientific phenomena such as crystallization and exothermic reactions to groups whose experimental work required patient and accurate measurements to be made over a period of a few weeks.
