Service as Action is at the core of the IB MYP program and is important to the development of students’ character. Service as Action starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part in the communities in which they live. It emphasizes on developing community awareness and concern, and the skills needed to make an effective contribution to society.
At Boston International School, our teachers prepare students to be involved in taking principled action as part of their learning throughout the programs. The IB presents a continuum of service, starting with Action in the Primary Years Program, in which students are engaged upon taking responsible actions as a result of their inquiry, to Service in the Diploma Program, with Service as Action in the Middle Years Program in between.
Since the beginning of November, there have been several fundraising events organized by our MYP students, with the support from their teachers. We started with the “Movemeber” movement, it was designed for students and staff to purchase the tickets to win the opportunity of shaving mustache off our 7 awesome teachers by the end of November after they had grown their mustache for one month. How did it eventually turn out? Of course in a very unforgettable way! Students who voted were randomly picked from the voting box, and gave the teacher they voted a full shaving service. Although the majority of students had never shaved for anyone before, the shaving time turned out really hilarious!
What matters is, through this fun-filled and meaningful event, all of our students together with all staff were involved, to create awareness around men’s health, to be able to contribute to the Cancer Foundation of China for future research.
Our MYP students have also organized the Bake sale to collect proceeds with which students will sponsor microloans to individuals around the world through an organization called Kiva (www.kiva.org). This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the struggle of others and to take action to help. Over time, loans are paid back and students can reinvest it to help other people. The Bake Sale event was a complete success, which our Early Years students were able to participate in and contribute to as well!
Since Christmas is just around the corner, our MYP students were able to take this opportunity to start yet another meaningful project. They have handmade beautify Christmas themed cards, as well as special occasions cards! These cards are for sale, and the proceeds will also go to Kiva Organization.
“ By lending as little as $25, you can help people around the world to create opportunity for themselves and their communities.”

At Boston International School, a math lesson is not only about math. With investment concept incorporated, we teach students find ways to raise money and to help those in need. We teach our students to use what they have learned and to incorporate them into their life practice. Through the IB courses here at Boston International School, we hope to bring the value of IB education to all students, to help them raise awareness of others and to care for the society.
We hope to have the opportunity to offer our education to your children.
