Psychology Lecture – Adolescent Relationships

Psychology Lecture – Adolescent Relationships

by BIS / 2022.04.15 Friday / Published in NEWS, news & event

As a parent, you may have to deal with the rapid change of your adolescent children – both biological and psychosocial. Conflicts between parents and children become more frequent and more intense during adolescence. Many are keen to develop their parent–adolescent relationships. Our Executive President Ms. Sue Su, who also has a teenage son, shared her experience with parents on a live stream on April 13.

Why do our kids change so rapidly during adolescence?
Ms. Sue Su analyzed the physiological development and the psychological changes that happen during the years of puberty. If parents can fully understand the physiological and psychological features of adolescents, it will be easier for them to empathize with their children.

How can parents deal with their child’s rebellion behaviors?
Although conflicts between parents and children become more frequent and more intense during adolescence, these conflicts are also thought to be a means to develop the parent–adolescent relationships. Ms. Sue Su shared some stories of her family that shows how conflicts are adaptive for relational development.

How can we effectively communicate with adolescents?
Many parents find it hard to control their negative emotions when communicating with teenagers, thus Ms. Sue Su suggested that one great way to exchange feelings is by writing letters to each other. In addition, thanks to children’s growth, parents also get a valuable opportunity to improve themselves by being role models to their kids.

Please watch the full video for more detailed information. We hope that all families can enjoy a healthy and joyful parent-children relationship!
