Short Novel

Students adapted the novel they studied, “莫泊桑拜师” into a play, adding the appropriate characters and a detailed description to create their own script, according to the theme, in a team.

The Unit title is “文字的力量”, to learn the short novels which can influence people’s feeling and thought. The Key Concept of this Unit is Communication, the Related Concept is Point of View, Theme and Structure.

From the very beginning of the Unit, students were aware of the Statement of Inquiry and learning activities. As readers, we can use our own cultural reference points to explore and understand the description of another culture. As writers, we can build bridges between our knowledge and imagination through our understanding of human experience. During the learning activities, students combine what they have learned about literary conventions with the background knowledge of how to write a play, in order to express their own points.

These activities made students achieve the following: first, language and literature learning, including style and stylistic choices of a play. Second, improving students’ ability to work as a team. Third, improving self-confidence and oral expression. For example, when adapting the play, it is important for students to include an understanding of short novel and work with each other. This links IB Learner Profile: Communicator and Open-minded.
