It’s Earth Day – a day to specially recognize our planet and its’ environment. Some of our students have asked us all at 7pm to turn our lights off for 10 minutes to save some energy and show we care for our planet. I think that’s a great idea and will be joining in myself at home.
At BIS, we are proud supporters of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Here’s what other ideas we have at Boston International School that show we care about our environment.
Grade 4 are raising awareness of Life Below Water, by displaying our single-use plastic in the central quad as a way of visually demonstrating how much single use plastic gets used. It’s ugly, but effective. It’s a good way to get discussions going about what we throw away and what we can do to reduce that.
In Grade 6 I&S class, they have been learning about the effects of global warming on our polar ice caps, and what sea levels could look like if the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic melts at different rates by 2100. In some examples, it threatens large areas of China’s coastline and population, including Wuxi.
We can always do better when it comes to sustainable practices. Our teachers and our students have great ideas for their classrooms and for our school community, so as part of our Teacher Inservice Program next week we have a sustainability consultation with our teachers, and we will continue working with our Boston Earth Summit to hear what ideas and solutions they have to grow together.
