Week 2 – Around the World

Little Stars

Age 2 to 4

Welcome to our second week of BIS Early Years Summer Camp. This week’s theme was Around the World! What a wonderful week we had! We went across the globe to explore our favorite countries and learnt a little about various cultures and how others live. It is a great way to learn geography skills and expose children to other cultures. Most importantly, we can help children nurture a love for exploration and a sense of respect and empathy for other ways of life. Through simple crafts, dance, music, culinary and fun activities we could spark children’s curiosities about other cultures and set the foundation for further exploration.

FOR OUR VERY FIRST ‘AROUND THE WORLD’ JOURNEY, WE STARTED BY MAKING A WEEKLY SCHEDULE WHICH MADE OUR TRIP BUSY YET FULFILLING. WE VISITED ONE COUNTRY/LOCATION PER DAY, FOCUSING ON A DIFFERENT CONTINENT EACH DAY.

1st Stop Africa

We have loved traveling “around the world” with our friends and teachers. Our Africa Continent Inquiry was one of the most engaging and memorable parts of our “travels.” We are excited to share some of our favorite Africa activities!

2nd Stop Italy

We were well on our way to continuing to explore fun, engaging and exciting world activities. Our second stop is – ITALY! We did a quick Italy trip for our children…we read about Italian traditional story Pinocchio and saw the sites we thought would be interesting. Then we “journeyed” to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Duomo di Milano, children were fascinated by these beautiful sites and facts. A trip like this would not be complete without a little taste of Italian desert. So, we decided to make some delicious pancakes! Cooking with children is a great way to explore math and science and also encourage children to use all their senses to observe what happened.

Do you like our pancakes?

3rd Stop Japan

On Wednesday, we “travelled” to Japan and experienced Japanese culture and tradition. We are very thankful for our special guest showed us the traditional Japanese clothing and other interesting cultures which helped us gain a deeper understanding of Japan.

It was a great fun to make our very FIRST Japanese food – “Onigiri”!

4th Stop Brazil

We “flew” to the fourth stop of our “Around the world” journey – Brazil which is the largest country in South America.

As we all know, we can’t have a list of fun facts about Brazil without mentioning “futebol” which we call it “football/soccer”. We certainly had a lot of fun when we were playing football together.

We also explored the largest carnival all around the world – Brazil carnivals! We immersed ourselves in Brazilian traditional music and dance and Brazilian people’s passion and enthusiasm.

LOOK at our fancy masks! We can’t wait to dance with our carnival style masks!

5th Stop World Cultures Party!

After traveling to Asia-Japan, Europe-Italy, Africa, and South America – Brazil Monday through Thursday, Friday was set aside for a world cultures party!

Ms. Aida’s Class

During the second week of our Summer camp we explored through book stories, songs and games more and more. We enhanced all the vocabulary we need to gain to be able to follow instructions and express our needs, feelings and wants in English.

Curious Mind

Age 4 to 6

This week we focused on the topic ‘Around the World’. Before the activities, the children discussed this topic together so that they became curious about the world, there are different places, different countries, different languages, different traditional cultures, different Food culture, and different traditional costumes. In order to solve these problems, we went through various activities such as making flags, making pizza toast, learning about characteristics of different countries, e.g. For the purpose of letting children understand the food culture of different countries, we made pizza toast collaboratively therefore children learned the basic procedures of making it and enjoyed during the process.

In order to comprehend the culture of different countries, we had a video call with Ms. Aida’s sister who lives in Colombia to learn about people’s daily life and habits. We also invited a special guest so that children could learn about Japanese culture and traditional costumes, which inspired children to create flags and costumes.

The most exciting part for the children was that they walked on a red carpet to show their work and intelligence. In the following learning and exploration process, children will become more confident and innovative. Let’s make persistent efforts together.

Ms. Aida’s Class

During this second week of our Summer Camp we keep working in phonics letter sounds and begin to play games such as rhyme words bingo and snakes and ladders game getting in practice our communication, thinking and social skills in order to improve them.

Dance Lessons

On Friday we had an amazing dance class with Ana, a G11 student. We stretched our muscles, we followed instructions in order to gain control of our movements and learn ways to express our emotions and feelings through our body in different ways.
