2021 Week Without Wall – Lasting Memories (Part I: KG-G3)

2021 Week Without Wall – Lasting Memories (Part I: KG-G3)

by BIS / 2021.06.06 Sunday / Published in news & event
This week, BIS students enjoyed their time in the Week Without Wall program. The students were separated into different groups according to their grade and headed to five cities:

  • KG-G3 Wuxi
  • G4-G6 Anji
  • G7-G8 Yangshuo
  • G9-G10 Shaolin
  • G11-G12 Sanya
How did our young learners from KG-G3 spend their week? Follow Mr. Bremner to find out!

Week Without Walls is a wonderful opportunity for students to get outside their comfort zone, experience new activities, and make lasting memories with their fellow students. Our older Elementary and Secondary students had a chance to have adventures outside of the city, but why should they have all the fun? The younger elementary students had just as much fun at Boston with service opportunities, tree planting, cultural trips, and in-school activities.

Monday – Planting in the garden

On Monday, students went to the garden with Mrs. Rotunno and Ms. Mel to plant seeds and help with the planting of trees for the new Boston Orchard. Each group involved with Week Without Walls activities had tree planting as part of their week. Students designed a label for their yoghurt pot, then they filled it with soil and planted seeds in it. The classes also decorated their own plant pots to grow a class set of seeds.

Tuesday – Service to the community

Keen to get involved in their service project, students took a bus out to a 3km forest walk. They brought their protective gloves and their teachers and their teachers carried garbage bags. Once they arrived and had had a quick snack, they followed the path around, collecting garbage that had been disposed of as they went. They found a big range of items, from polystyrene packaging, batteries, drinks cans, bottles, glass, plastic packaging, metal items, pottery, and even two items of furniture. Teachers carried large garbage bags and escorted the students around the three kilometer route as the children did their part to restore the path to a cleaner state.

Wednesday – Orient Champ

On Wednesday, our ELL team led the students on the buses to Orient Champ Park for a day of activities. They were able to feed goats, chickens, and a horse. They did traditional Chinese printing and cloth dying and got to play in the playground. They also tried out clay molding using a potter’s wheel.

Thursday – Ehu Rose Park & Sleepover

This was our biggest day of the week for the students. It began with the Grade 3 team leading the students to Ehu Rose Park for the day to participate in a series of activities including making rose cookies and hamburgers, and drawing, painting and flying kites.

Once students got back, the Grade 2 team took the lead for the Elementary Sleepover. Most of the students stayed overnight with a few going home at 8pm, still able to take part in the evening activities. Students played dodgeball, cat and mouse, and watched a movie in the auditorium before dinner in the canteen. After dinner, students did a variety of activities with their teachers including art activities, a disco, and making s’mores on a camp fire in the garden.

Friday – Craft Activities and Water Play

The last day of our Week Without Walls activities saw students doing craft rotations to make a series of items they could use at home in their workspace – a pencil holder and a piggy bank. Ms. Lauren and Ms. Sneha helped ensure students had time to try out each of the crafts to see what they enjoyed.

In the afternoon, at the end of the week, the school organized a water event, with three pools set up on the red tracks by the Elementary building. On a warm afternoon at the end of a busy week, students (and teachers) splashed around in the water, throwing and spraying one another and having a great time.
