Boston International School is proud to announce that it is hosting the annual American Mathematics Competitions 8 (AMC 8) on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. BIS is the ONLY hosting center of AMC 8 in Wuxi.

The AMC 8 is the leading mathematics competition for middle school students and is designed to cultivate the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem solvers. In 2018, approximately 140,000 students worldwide participated in the AMC 8.

BIS is now opening registration to all students in and out of school.

To BIS parents

We encourage ALL students from G6-G8 (G4 & G5 if possible) to sign up for the competition.

To the public

The BIS AMC 8 registration is also open to the public, please share with your family or friends if they would like to participate. All Students with a passion for problem-solving who are in grade 8 or below and under 14.5 years of age on the day of the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 8.

Registration Process

1. Enter the registration homepage through the QR code.

2. After opening the registration homepage, new user should register an account first, which can be done by China mobile phone number or email.

3. Click “我要报名”, fill in basic information and upload photos.

4. Please tick the box and confirm registration for AMC 8.

5. Students who have successfully registered will be informed of the admission number on the registration page no later than November 6, 2020. According to the arrangement of the host center, the mock test will be held on November 9, and the official AMC 8 administration is on November 11.

Activity Fee

The registration fee is 150RMB per student to be paid to Boston International School.
Please use the Alipay QR code for payment. This may include fees covering the registration fee as well as other administrative costs.

Competition Time

November 11, 2020, 5:00-5:40 PM

Competition Format

Students use laptop or desktop computers with cameras to take exam online by using the Eztest software in classrooms of Boston International School.

Participation Certificate

Certificate: Each student will receive a participation certificate. According to the criteria, some students and host centers will receive award certificates. The certificates will be issued by the Mathematical Association of America and distributed in electronic form after the competition, which will contain student’s photo, student name, and school name.

D – Certificate of Distinction | D-奖项:

Achieved a perfect score on the AMC 8.

HD – Honor Roll of Distinction | HD-奖项:

Scored in the top 1% worldwide (based on the score statistics of United States and Canada).

H – Honor Roll | H-奖项:

Scored in the top 1% ~ 5% worldwide (based on the score statistics of United States and Canada).

A – Certificate of Achievement | A-奖项:

Student in grade 6 or below who achieve a score of 15 or above.

SH – School Certificate of Honor | SH-奖项:

Award to host centers whose top 3 performers have a total team score of 66 or above in the AMC 8.

SM – School Certificate of Merit | SM-奖项:

Award to host centers whose top 3 performers have a total team score of 50 or above in the AMC 8.

Q&A

Q: What is AMC 8?

The AMC 8 is organized by MAA (The Mathematical Association of America), which is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

Q: What is covered in AMC 8?

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition, some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.

Q: Who is eligible to participate in the competition?

Students with a passion for problem-solving who are in grade 8 or below and under 14.5 years of age on the day of the competition are eligible to participate in the AMC 8.

Q: When do we get official scores and reports for the AMC 8?

The MAA AMC office will begin emailing official scores and reports in early to mid-December following the AMC 8 in November. The email reports go out roughly in the order that we process the answer forms submitted from schools. Processing and reporting from start to finish takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
