Through its inquiry-led, transdisciplinary framework, IBPYP Programme challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.
Our P5 students divided themselves into small groups, pick up a topic and gave their splendid presentations on May 29, which drew a perfect conclusion to their PYP Study.
01 Earthquakes and Tsunamis
The group looked primarily at the form and function of these two natural disasters. There was a significant scientific focus to their inquiry as they spent time researching how humans can predict natural disasters, so they can mitigate damage and loss of life and property.
One of them is Japanese, who offered a deep personal connection to this issue. With his scientific knowledge and technics, he even designed and manufactured a seismometer that able to ring an alarm when an earthquake comes.
02 Deforestation
The group focused on the problem from a historical and practical perspective. They explained the problems associated with cutting down too many trees and investigated many of the effects that those actions continue to cause. They explored how people are affected. Finally, they touched on ways that people can protect the forest which included simple things that anyone can do.
03 Over Population
The group focused on the reality of population growth in the past 200 years. They looked at the most populous countries and cities in the world and how living looked in different countries. Mathematics through surveys, charts and displayed played a prominent part in their presentation. They also studied about relating global issues such as birth control and planned parenting through the one child policy.
04 Ocean Pollution
The group studied how ocean pollution affects the way we live, and the responsibility that people and governments have to take care of our environment. Part of their learning included a visit to a local fish market to find out about practices that affect how the fishing industry plays a part in the process.
05 Garbage
The group focused on several different aspects connected to waste and waste disposal. They also examined the disposing of garbage and its connection to air pollution. They investigated landfills and how it highlights the reasons for recycling and alternatives for disposable products.
06 Air Pollution
The group focused on the causes of air pollution, how air pollution affects people and the connection between air pollution and global warming. They spent a lot of time researching the scientific principles of combustion and the collection of greenhouse gases. They made suggestions on how to cut down on air pollution.
IBPYP Programme in BIS
As the ONLY IB Continuum school in Wuxi, Boston International School stick to IB philosophy and places a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning. The PYP transdisciplinary framework focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both at school and beyond.
Inquiry – based Study
The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning. The programme incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum, asking students to look at six related, transdisciplinary themes and to consider the links between them. Students are given a lot of opportunities to study both in and outside the school in order to have better understand in their learning issues.
Language Learning
As an international school we embrace different cultures. We respect all students’ mother tongues and also provide mother tongue classes. We offer 3 Mandarin classes per week starting from EY3, and 5 classes per week for students P1 and up. All students up to Grade 10 will have to learn mandarin since China is the hose country of our school. Besides Mandarin, we also offer mother tongue languages in Korean and Japanese. We offer French and German for our world languages classes.
From next academic year, BIS is opening up two classes per grade level in PYP Programme to better serve the needs of world-class international education from Wuxi Community and the cities close by. Welcome to contact us and learn more about PYP Programme.
