IBMYP Students Inspire with Personal Project

IBMYP Students Inspire with Personal Project

by BIS / 2020.05.18 Monday / Published in news & event

The MYP personal project is a student-centered and age appropriate practical exploration in which all G10 students consolidate their learning. For IBMYP students, the personal project encourages them to complete a significant piece of work over an extended period, and the aim of the project is to enable students to reflect on their learning and the outcomes of their work and cultivate their key skills that prepare them for success in further study, the workplace and the community.

G10 students have completed MYP Personal Project on May 8th. Students presented on a diverse range of topics, including the Psychology of Dance, Suzhou Gardens, Sichuan Opera, Basketball Verticals, Bel Canto Singing, Effects of Sleep, Stop Motion Animation, Extinction, Greek Philosophy, Computer Programming, Chinese Food Culture, Product Placement, Aromatherapy, Sengoku Jidai War, Parental Factors in Education, Marketing in the NBA, International Education in China, and Psychology and Gaming Addiction. The MYP Personal Projects plays an essential role in helping students to find where their passion lies.

Aims of the MYP Personal Projects:

  • Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context.
  • Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation.
  • Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time.
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning.
  • Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.

Below are some representative cases from this year’s Personal Projects.

Product Placement

Julia Choi looks into Advertising and her topic is “Does Product Placement positively impact our life?” The goal of her personal project is to research and inform about product placement to the others and discover pros and cons of product placement. She’s also creating her own advertisement.

Sengoku Jidai

Lucky Shah’s goal for his Personal Project is to research and examine the Sengoku Jidai (The 100 year Onin wars of Japan). He answers the questions of What were these wars, as in how can they be classified? When did they happen, why was this period so significant for the future of Japan? Who started these wars, is there a single man/group responsible? It is a great opportunity for him to study what he interested in.

Aromatherapy

Jessie Choi researches and identifies the impact of aromatherapy on mental health disorders and answers the question “Does the aromatherapy genuinely work for mental illness?”. The project studies the relation of mental health and psychotherapy.

Suzhou Garden

Ophelia Wang studies on Suzhou Garden. Her product is a paper on architecture and mathematics. Her research question is “Is the geometric law of golden section applicable to Chinese architectural elements?” This is from another Angle to find the characteristics of Suzhou Gardens. There is also a combination of Chinese and western significance since the golden ratio is a western way of building.

Other students also did a splendid job presenting their outcomes.

Congratulations to G10 students for completion of the MYP Personal Projects! Well done!
