MUN Kiva Fundraising Microloans
This Academic Highlight was written by the leader of the Kiva Fundraising Event, Yoyo Huang from G9:
“Though the actual event only lasted two hours, days and nights were dedicated to preparing. Consent forms had to be written and translated, posters designed and printed, invitations sent to selected performers, tickets procedures decided and prepared, performance schedule set up, activities designed, decorations bought and made… Other than preparing physical elements, sponsors and volunteers also had to be contacted. A fewstudents volunteered to help set up the event and the Boston Parents Association (BPA)was also contacted to fund the food for the party. We also negotiated with specific teachers and the IT team in order to carry out the music performances and display a movie in the canteen, where the final event took place.
Thanks to the overwhelming effort presented by all performers, the performances were a big hit! Whether it was singing, dancing, or playing an instrument, each and every performer was able to showcase their unique talent and receive applause from an amused and excited audience. The doodling area also proved popular, especially among younger students. As intended, participants got off of their phones and socialized!”
A total of RMB3,160 was raised from this fundraiser. It will be micro loaned through Kiva. Kiva allows small businesses around the world to become self-sustainable and improve peoples’ standard of living. This allows Boston International School students to directly contribute to the UN Sustainability Goals. Please see more information about Kiva here: kiva.org.
Yoyo’s group chose to loan the money to the Doktuz clinic in Peru:
“Doktuz is a clinic in Peru that helps improve the health of marginalized people. They asked for a total loan of $50, 000 (353, 260RMB) to expand their business by building more clinics. This way, they will be able to reach more people in need. When we heard about Doktuz’s story, we knew that we had to help out. This special loan will not only help the clinic itself but moreover, it will help support a community of marginalized people. We see this as a way to spread love and kindness around the world.”
