Congratulations to BIS Students on Winning AP Scholar Awards!

  • 1 AP Scholar Distinction award (the highest category) for G11 Tristan
  • 1 AP Scholar with Honor award (the 2nd highest category) for G11 Cindy

About AP Scholar Award

According to College Board, the AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP Exams. The criteria are as below:

❖ AP Scholar – Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

❖ AP Scholar with Honor – Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

❖ AP Scholar with Distinction – Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

We have invited both students to share some of their experiences to students who are going to take AP classes next year.

Q: What AP subjects did you take?

Cindy: This year I took the AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, AP Chinese Language, and AP Biology exams.
Tristan: I took AP Calculus BC, AP Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP Chinese Language and Culture. I also took AP Computer Science Principles in my Grade 9 year.

Q: How did you prepare for AP tests?

Cindy: To prepare for this year’s AP tests I used several past papers, and I studied using AP textbooks.

Tristan: We used textbooks and I used Khan Academy for physics and chemistry. Then after all the learning we started doing practice multiple choice questions from the textbooks. However, we couldn’t find MCQ from the official website so for Calculus we didn’t practice MCQ. We did however find free response questions for all subjects, so we finished many FRQs for all subjects except Chinese.

Q: Do you have any suggestions for students who are going to take AP courses?

Cindy: I suggest that students who are going to take AP courses or exams should choose the subjects that they will choose for their college majors in the future. I also suggest that students don’t overwhelm themselves with too many AP courses a year. Preparing 1-2 AP exams per year as IB student is more than enough.

Tristan: To save time, try to aim for the more difficult subjects, some universities value some subjects over others. Take Calculus for example, if you take Calculus BC, universities would give you credit for either getting a 4 or 5. But if you take Calculus AB, then most universities would require a 5 for credit.

Q: What’s your plan for next academic year?

Cindy: My plan for the next academic year is to prepare for my IB exams and study throughout the school year.

Tristan: Focus mainly on IB, try to get the grades I need for SAT and TOEFL during the summer holidays.

Q: How do you spend your summer holiday?

Cindy: Throughout the summer holiday I have been taking extra classes, participating in an online Model United Nations conference, preparing for SAT, writing my Extended Essay, my college applications, I have also participated in summer school. To expand my horizons, I have been traveling with my family and serving the community through various activities.

Tristan: HSYLC, SAT, TOEFL, School homework, papers… I also play games, go to the gym, play sports.

From next academic year, BIS is going to offer more AP courses that students can take from Grade 9. We are looking forward to more exciting achievements!
