I remember I first gave the HOSA preliminary test sitting in Starbucks, not thinking I would get an award. However, I felt like I found my strength when I got the gold and bronze award. This achievement motivated me to try harder and harder and eventually get to this point.
I feel like I could not have done this without the support of my academic competition coach Ms. Zhu who helped me through every step of the process. Sometimes my progress was slow, but she stayed patient and helped in any way she could. If I were to advise anyone attempting an academic competition, it would definitely be to manage your time well and not prepare in the last week as I did. Section and plan your time so the pressure does not come at the last moment.
The most prestigious chemistry competition for school students in the UK | Administered by the RSC-one of the world’s most influential chemistry organisations | Special opportunity for Chinese students to compete on the same problems as UK students | Awards provide evidence supporting applications to top universities.
The self-study process was strenuous as the exam composed of topics that did not belong in the normal IB syllabus. At the edge of giving up studying for the test, due to the immense pressure of school work and the fact that I didn’t even have an idea of where to start, Ms. Zhu and my mother stepped up. They were true motivators, helping me stay calm and positive. More so spending much of their limited free time to find resources for me to study, such as revision sheets, online practices, past papers, etc. Although luck is an inevitable factor of success, hard work and perseverance ensures the final result; without the resources provided by my mother and my coach, I stood no chance at achieving a bronze award all alone.
