BIS Joins the National Association of Student Councils

BIS Joins the National Association of Student Councils

by BIS / 2022.05.06 Friday / Published in NEWS, news & event

Boston International School is proud to announce that we have recently joined the National Associations of Student Councils. This organization, called NatStuCo, is a professional group out of the US that encourages and promotes Student Council activities throughout North America and other international schools. It is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Mr. Carlos Arboleda

Student Services Directorand Student Council sponsor

As members of NatStuCo, our BIS Student Council and representatives access a long tradition of knowledge and action in school leadership and academic community development. With service towards others being at the center of their responsibilities, they collaborate with other member councils, learn from, and contribute to the shared body of experience.

This year, parents may be familiar with some of the events that Student Council has sponsored. One was the Winter Ball where student council members planned the theme and marketed the event, raised funds, planned for tickets, managed budgets, helped to decorate the event, planned for tickets, picked the cuisine, and organized most of the event’s happenings.

Bernice, G10

Public Relations Officer

The Student Council helps share students’ ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. The Student Council’s goal is to contribute to the educational experiences of students by providing them with a positive involvement in the school. Having the role of Student Council’s Public Relations Officer has fostered my critical thinking skills, leadership abilities, professionalism, and has also improved my communication skills with peers and superiors.

Student Council recently finished sponsoring the Secondary Dodgeball tournament that took place during morning break time in the gymnasium. Students were encouraged to compete as a way to build house spirit, get to know others, and engage in athletic competition outside of the normal school day. Student Council had over 50 students taking part in this event.

Andres, G12

Vice Chair

The Student Council is a space in which I feel that I was given the opportunity to drive a change and most importantly to support a thorough unification of the student body.

The council and representatives also engage in inclusion campaigns such as “no one eats alone” in which they model friendliness and kind sentiments by inviting peers to join in during meal times, free time, and a diversity of activities throughout the day.

Cindy, G11

Treasurer

I really enjoyed collaborating with people from different grades and exchange creative thoughts and ideas with them, We were able to hold few successful events like winter wonderland and dodgeball. Although the process is very tiring, the end result was very satisfying.

Student Council members meet weekly with Mr. Arboleda as the school sponsor. During this time, representatives from each homeroom share their ideas as well as discuss upcoming events and possibilities. Both the class representatives and officers are chosen through a student vote.

Lucky, G12

Chair

I believe the Student Council is not only an essential tool in bringing together the Students and Teachers/School, but also an opportunity for students in the Council to develop decision-making and leadership skills that will empower them in their future ambitions.

BIS is proud of its officers and student council members, and we look forward to joining NatStuCo to continue our exposure and leadership opportunities for students.

Nathaniel, G11

Secretary

This year I have enjoyed being on the student council because it provides a platform for us to serve our peers in various ways and represent our community. One of my favorite parts from this year was organizing the Winter Ball because it helped me grow as a leader while supporting the student body.
