The Chinese New Year/Spring Festival is the beginning of the lunar New Year, it is also one of the most important Chinese traditional festivals. It does not only reflect Chinese people’s belief in Chinese traditions, cultures and good wishes, it also demonstrates how Chinese people pray for good fortune and to celebrate with splendid food and entertainments.
Boston International School is an international community where Chinese and Western cultures meet together. In order to let our children feel the Chinese cultures and traditions, our Mandarin Department and Parents Association jointly organized a spectacular event — Chinese New Year show.
Since last week, parents have been busy decorating the school with Chinese traditional decorations. From hanging up the red lanterns, posting the blessing paper-cuts, to writing couplets, our whole school is filled with a strong atmosphere of Spring Festival.
The morning of January 30th 2019, all the teachers, students and parents of our school gathered together in the auditorium and watched this amazing show to welcome the arrival of the lunar New Year!
Under the very well planned arrangements from our Mandarin Department, with the seamless preparation from all of our students, the show was so amazing and everyone gave their full play to their talents and celebrated the Chinese New Year in their own unique way.
During the Early Years students’ performances, our EY4 kids gave a runway show in ancient costumes, very sharp and cute at the same time; Our EY3 kids were dressed in the Kitten’s costumes and sang the kitten’s song, so adorable! Our KG big kids were dressed in traditional red winter outfit and wished Happy New Year to all audience, accompanied by the god of wealth.
When it’s the PYP students’ turn to perform, the students showed their amazing talents in their own way. P1 students performed the song named <Follow Me>; P2 students used several instruments to play and perform the song <The Descendants of the Dragon>; P3 students brought up the atmosphere by dancing to the song <Jasmine>, with the traditional Chinese fans; P4 students sang <Chinese Language> with tongue twisters, integrating traditional Chinese tongue twisters into modern hip-hop music, from which foreign students and parents can learn more about Chinese cultures; P5 students played a traditional Chinese instrument – Gu Zheng, and brought everyone back to ancient times, watching the ancient people posting Spring Festival couplets, writing the blessing words, and to experience what the ancient people’s festival was like.
“Hey!” “Ha!” With the shouting sounds, all the students in M1 dedicated a “Chinese Kung Fu” performance for us; M2 and M5 students together performed the reading of Chinese ancient books, with the traditional Chinese instrument – Gu Qin, where everyone can feel the essence of Chinese culture. M3 students’ dance show was <Qian Shou Guan Yin> and <Qing Hua Ci>, which brought all of us to a high spirit during the show. Afterwards, a fluorescent dance was brought by two students in M5. Combing the modern technology, their performance made the students scream nonstop. The final performance is the dragon dance, brought by M4 students, with the sonorous and powerful drum sound, the dragon went up and down, which brought the entire audience to cheer for a long time!
In addition to the wonderful performances by students, there were also amazing performances by our teachers and parents. Our DP Coordinator sang the famous song <Shanghai Tan> in Cantonese and our music teachers sang <Xin Gui Fei Zui Jiu>, which was refreshing for everyone. Our parents also gave an amazing performance <Dan Yuan Ren Chang Jiu> at the same time.
After lunch, with the arrangement of Parents Association, parents of all different countries help organized a variety of traditional folk activities that have Chinese characteristics built-in, were held for our students.
Thanks to the timeless planning and guidance from our teachers in Mandarin department, as well as the support and participation of our parents, let’s all gather together again next year for a even more splendid BIS Chinese New Year Show time!
